ESPN has been arranging the move for sometime as it worked with both schools to juggle their schedules. Auburn wanted the move in order to give its new starting quarterback more time to get acquainted with the offense. West Virginia will have more time to work with new head coach Bill Stewart.
The immediate change for Auburn is that a home game with Southern Miss originally scheduled for Oct. 18 will be moved into the West Virginia slot on Sept. 6. That will be the second game of the year for the Tigers.
Auburn will have an open date on Oct. 18.
The Tigers will open the season Aug. 30 against Louisiana-Monroe.

Auburn announced late Wednesday afternoon it has hired Tony Franklin as its offensive coordinator. The former Troy and Kentucky assistant coach will be on the field when Auburn begins practice Friday for the Chick-fil-A Bowl.
Franklin, who emerged as the leading candidate Tuesday, replaces Al Borges, who resigned last week.
“Tony has had a tremendous amount of success offensively in the Southeastern Conference and during his most recent position at Troy,” said Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville. “He teaches an exciting brand of offense that has posted some very impressive numbers, statistically.”

Auburn has extended Coach Tommy Tuberville’s contract for an additional two years, and added an increase of $200,000 annually, though the 2013 season announced Athletics Director Jay Jacobs Tuesday. The extension of the contract makes it a six-year agreement, worth an average of 3.3 million annually.
“We’re very pleased with the success, hard work and efforts of Coach Tuberville and his staff,” Jacobs said. “Tommy and I worked patiently though this process and did what was best for Auburn. He has not only achieved success with a winning program, but has student-athletes that graduate and represent Auburn in the finest manner.”
